FAQ's

Grimsby Tiling

Can we tile direct on to new, bare plaster walls?

Yes, but only after a drying period.

Can you tile onto emulsion?

Yes, but the surface must be sound, and capable of supporting the weight of the tiles.

Can you tile on top of existing tiles?

Yes, providing the existing tiles are still firmly fixed and offer a flat surface.

I'd like my worktops tiled, is this OK?

Yes, but as worktops are used for food preparation a special epoxy grout must be used.

Do you supply the adhesive and grout?

Yes, the type of adhesive and grout is vital to the success of any tiling work and I prefer to use those that I am familiar with.

Can I put Floor tiles on the wall?

Yes, but the weight of the tiles must not exceed the recommendations for the type of wall surface, and special adhesives must be used.

What sizes are tiles?

Tiles come in many sizes and are generally square or rectangular in shape. They can be fixed "square" or in a "Flemish Bond" like bricks. Small (10cm) tiles are popular in kitchens, with larger tiles more usual in bathrooms.

Can I put Floor tiles on the wall?

Yes, but the weight of the tiles must not exceed the recommendations for the type of wall surface, and special adhesives must be used.

Do I need to remove the skirting boards?

It makes for a neater job if skirting boards are removed, especially on larger or wooden floors as this allows for expansion movement under the skirting board. Have you thought of using tile edges on the wall as a skirting?

Can you tile on wood floors?

Yes, but the floor needs to be rigid to prevent movement. If required, this can be achieved by over boarding the existing floor with plywood or tile backer board.

How soon after a concrete floor is laid can I tile?

Normally six weeks, however by using a fast track adhesive, this can be reduced to three or four days.

Are tiled floors waterproof?

They are not totally waterproof, even though the same adhesives and grouts are used in swimming pools. However the use of a "tanking system" as used in "Wet Rooms" will make the walls and floor waterproof.
